Quality Control

Where it begins, the farms

W100_1275Our Flagship farm, Hacienda La Minita, is widely recognized as one of the finest plantations in the world. La Minita not only produces simply amazing J. Traders coffees, it is the world standard for Sustainable and Responsible Farming and Processing. At J. Traders we believe it is important to support responsible farming practices. Simply put what this means is we take care of our employees, the land and the atmosphere. Our employee’s benefits include family housing and preventative medical and dental care for not only the employees but also their families. Soil composition balancing and erosion control are integral parts of our daily farming practices. We generate our own electricity by utilizing hydroelectric generators and we were the first coffee producer in the world to use a biomass furnace to dramatically reduce our energy consumption. Taking care of the earth is something we take very seriously at J. Traders. In addition to La Minita, J. Traders has other farms in Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala, East Africa and Indonesia.

The difference between J. Traders and all of the others is the quality! J. Traders uses only the highest quality specialty grade beans. Always, 100% Arabica, never Robusta. Hand picked, high grown beans give J. Traders it distinctive smooth taste and delicious aroma. Our beans go through 15 different quality inspections and repeated cupping before being chosen as a J. Traders coffee bean.

The Roasting….

W100_1378RoastEven the best beans can be ruined by a poor roasting process. At J. Traders we believe our patented convection roasting process produces the best cup of coffee possible – hands down! We use computer controlled convection roasters for absolute recipe roast control. There are several key differences that give convection roasted beans superior flavor Vs the traditional drum roasted bean. Most importantly, convection roasting yields an evenly roasted bean, inside and out, thus producing a smooth, clean tasting cup of coffee. Drum roasters tend to roast unevenly – from the outside of the bean. The result is commonly an over or under roasted bean. Everyone has tasted coffee that has a burnt flavor– this is a direct result of over roasted beans. Under roasted beans are equally unappetizing with a sour or grassy taste.
